Same. My husband “tell the kids to stop turning down the thermostat” have never heard anyone say to turn the AC down meaning to make it warmer. I do agree that I would not infer that someone saying to turn down the AC wanted it colder, I would ask.
Heater yes. “Turn up the heat!” means make it warmer. Though I hate the heater as much as I hate the cold so never say that either.
If someone says, “Turn the AC up.” you know they want it colder but you actually turn it down.
I mean, it kinda depends on your mental model. If you think the AC is “low” as in not running a lot you can turn it “up” so it’s making things colder.
People around me, don’t say that. We say, “Turn the temp down”.

Turn the heat up and turn the AC up means fundamentally different things though.
