Meh. That is why the narrow application of standards is another obstacle to learning. I was top of my math classes all through high school and university, despite my ‘slow’ multiplication that required no memorization.
Buy less crap. That’s it. It sounds like a sacrifice, but stuff doesn’t make you happy (provided your basic needs are met). If you are working longer hours to pay for your cars and tvs and fast fashion, your life might improve.
Playing with a cellphone is kinda fun. Know what’s really fun? Friends.
If you’re under 60, buying less crap is going to disrupt your life less than climate change will, so i think i am entitled to the aforementioned bonus points.
Hi! I am from Canada. A large portion of our taxpayers hate public servants and describe them as lazy, entitled, and incompetent. I have worked in both the public and private sector. My impression is that the public service is mostly filled with idealistic, dedicated people who could make more money in the private sector but choose to work for the public service because they believe in good government. Many of them work very hard, even without pressure from their supervisors. There are, as you say, rotten apples - but they are a small minority.
I think that attacks on the public service are right-wing attempts to undermine faith in government - they are trying to promote privatization (which benefits private corporations at the expense of the public) and cuts to social programs (in order to reduce the tax burden of the rich).
Key facts, sure. If you don’t know geography, no amount of reflection can provide you with the location of Hong Kong.
However, i can figure out anything on the 12x12 timestable in a few seconds, no memorization needed. I don’t even need the landmark numbers that i mentioned because multiplication is just repeated addition. The only things i had to memorize were the numerals and the operators.
I also just work it out in my head. There are certain “landmark” numbers and tricks that I use to save time. For example, 9 times any number is easy: multiply by 10 and subtract once. x11 is similar. Same with anything close to a perfect square. (7 x 8 = 7 x 7 + 7)
I think that memorization was important to achieve speed before phones/calculators. Nowadays, I would consider memorization an obstacle to understanding.
Yeah, really. He’s not fit to chair a bake sale committee.
If I am not in a position to give i look the person in the eye, smile apologetically and say, “no, sorry.” I try not to ignore them and i am never rude. No one has ever reacted badly.
Canada, too. For the last two years, Canada has entrusted sensitive statistical information to Microsoft. We should be treating MS with the same skepticism we currently reserve for Huawei.
Oh, Vladimir V. Putin. I thought you were referring to the other Putin.
Yes. My son has a genetic disorder and receives care from my country’s socialized medical system. Donald Trump has threatened to annex my country. I would not be able to afford the treatments that keep my son alive under Trump. I boycott American goods like my child’s life depends on it. People need to understand that Trump’s threats towards the USA’s former allies imply deadly consequences. Fuck Trump, fuck maga, and fuck anyone who supports them by buying their shitty goods. Unless you have absolutely no choice, don’t buy American.
Wow. You are fully revealed. Scratch a bigot, find a nazi.
I know that the war has high support in Israel, but even 80% is still not all Israelis, let alone all jewish people. I think a lot of Israeli people have dual citizenship. Personally, I wouldn’t want to live in a country that is committing a genocide - I would leave. At least some people who choose to live in Israel are ok with illegal settlements, bombing children, etc. They self-selected and that is why they are there - some even left the countries where they were born to become settlers. Jewish people are not all the same.
75M Americans voted for a fascist piece of shit in their last election. Would it be weird if I held a grudge against white Christians in Norway because of that fact?
Which jews do you mean? Are jewish people a monolith? Do they all agree on the fate of palestinian children?
The poster you are responding to specifically said zionist. You brought all jews into the conversation.
What kind of idiot brings a kilo to a mega fight?
That’s a good point, actually. It’s worth noting, though, that Trump ran as the anti-elite candidate - a fact that is beyond absurd for someone who inherited almost a billion dollars. If a Manhattan billionaire can run as an everyman, maybe Poillievre’s long participation in Candian politics and his role under Harper would not prevent him running as a ‘political outsider.’ People might be dumb enough to believe it.
Canada had a Trump clone run in its last election. He faceplanted because Trump started threatening to annex Canada during the election. Maybe Farage’s endorsement of the worst Trump policies will have a similar effect.
Coincidentally, Canada’s Trump clone also had a punchable face. Maybe being full of shit naturally makes you look constipated and ill-tempered.
Came here to vote for the Lift and also ask whatcha got against gorillas?
All my bros in primate marketing were saddened by your comment.
Yes, but also for the better in some cases. There are things about kids today that make me shake my head, and other things make me glad.
I think with good parenting and reasonable limits, the Internet can be good or at least neutral for kids. It’s bad for anyone to be always online, but within the parameters of our current society, it’s probably bad to never be online.
The problem, as it has always been, is that many parents either suck at parenting or are too busy to do a good job. If every parent was good, we wouldn’t need a minimum age for alcohol, for example. These restrictions are meant to prevent the worst harms in cases where the parents can’t or won’t do a good job.
Fast walking au naturel, that is, without headphones ;). I concentrate on my stride or my breath.
