It’s absolutely hilarious how European political mainstream created an echo chamber where the possibility of Trump winning was completely inconceivable. They bet everything on being able to hide behind America’s skirts and are now left grappling with the fact that they have no friends left.

It might’ve been if Europe actually was independent. In practice, Europe is entirely dependent on the US militarily, which allows the US to dictate terms to Europe.

To do what, exactly? Defend them against the hypothetical Russian invasion? That was hardly in the books. Exercise force in defence of colonial interests? France been doing that by themselves just fine (until recently). If anything, US military presence in Europe seems to be for the benefit of USA and USA alone

That’s precisely what, it doesn’t matter that the invasion is a fantastical idea as long as Europeans believe in it. You’re completely correct that US military presence in Europe benefits the US a lot more than it does Europe. NATO is a protection racket the US set up after WW2 to ensure that Europe didn’t fall into Soviet sphere of influence. Today, it’s ensuring that Europe doesn’t get too cozy with Russia and China which would degrade US political influence there.

Current European mainstream is atlanticist to the core, so unless there’s major political change in Europe I don’t see how it’s going to break free.
