This is a subtly good thing for the fediverse, assuming they are able to draw people away from Reddit. Divide and conquer.

Once ppl are comfortable using one alternative they’ll feel comfortable using others

It’s usually the first migration that people are most resistant to. The 2nd or 3rd time is a lot easier.

Yes, there’s a major activation energy barrier for the first time. For example, for me moving to Linux, Oracle VirtualBox was absolutely instrumental in helping me feel more comfortable. Reddit itself was also weird at first and off-putting until I simply tried magnifying the font size; back then, we only had what-is-now-Old Reddit, which was a pain to navigate at 100% size until I got used to it. Anyway, hopefully this Bluesky development will finally break X’s might, even if it’s not that much better of an alternative… and then gradually grow our own numbers here on Lemmy.

NGL, I rotate among at least 4 accounts across different instances here lol. It was originally out of accident because of my misunderstanding back then of how the Fediverse works, but now I just randomly use them as a simultaneous, illusory boost to Lemmy’s activity as well as my own pseudo-privacy lol. I like to think that it helps overall…

Maybe, but I’ve seen a lot of people promoting BlueSky who don’t or won’t use Mastodon.

That’s not what I mean. It’s breaking up the centralization and Reddit’s hegemony in general that’s good for smaller platforms like ours

Its not breaking up centralization. It’s just trying to get the centralization in a new set of hands.
