Privacy@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Your ring camera is being used to abduct your neighbors
21·2 months agoNot advocating for Ring use but doesn’t enabling feed and storage encryption reduce/remove this problem? Enabling it seems to limit a lot of features that would be dependent upon an unencrypted feed.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•People who can understand multiple languages, or have moved to another country, or otherwise traveled abroad; Do you feel like you experience existence from a PoV that nobody else can understand?
10·4 months agoDiversifying your means of understanding can feel really rewarding(and challenging).
As for missing something…I think we overestimate how much language shapes thinking. Most meals are just a version of pizza.

World News@lemmy.world•Cities in Australia debate removing fluoride from waterEnglish
12·5 months agoMaybe a meet in the middle solution (even if it’s a misguided emotionally driven recapturing of control movement) is something like:
« we’ll agree to remove fluoride from the water but in support/exchange we will ban the sale of bottled water in the same areas(or place a prohibitively high tax on their purchase). »
Since the sources of bottled water are often dubious and unregulated, it’s the best way to reduce the chance that fluoridated water finds its way into the community by bottle and reduces waste at the same time 🤷♀️
Use potential tax savings to subsidize fluoride treatment to families that are interested?
Democratization.
DeepL for translation. It’s not perfect but it feels so much better than those associated w/ search engines.

World News@lemmy.world•Engine fuel switches cut off before Air India crash that killed 260, preliminary report findsEnglish
211·8 months agoSeems like it’s either deliberately negligent or sinister:
« The switches are equipped with safeguards, including a locking mechanism, to prevent accidental movement.
They are most often used to turn engines off once a plane has arrived at its airport gate and in certain emergency situations, such as an engine fire. The report does not indicate there was any emergency requiring an engine cutoff.
A US aviation safety expert, John Cox, told Reuters a pilot would not be able to accidentally move the fuel switches that feed the engines. “You can’t bump them and they move, »
« The switches flipped a second apart, the report said, roughly the time it would take to shift one and then the other, according to US aviation expert John Nance. He added that a pilot would normally never turn the switches off in flight, especially as the plane is starting to climb. »
