“Everybody talks about wanting to change things and help and fix, but ultimately all you can do is fix yourself. And that's a lot. Because if you can fix yourself, it has a ripple effect.”

While its definitely true that you need to take care of yourself before you can help others, this sounds like some Ayn Rand shit (advocating individualism over collectivism). The proletariat need to recognize the bourgeois are a shared enemy and that organization is necessary to defeat inequality.

I’ll be sure to let my father know he doesn’t need his doctors’ help for his cancer, he can just fix himself!

Fixing yourself often involves letting others help you to fix yourself.

This will be a generalization, so it doesn’t apply to all cases, but for the most part, you are far worse at helping others if you’re unable to help yourself. If you’re unable to show others as an example of the fruits of their labor of change, it will be far more difficult to lead them to helping themselves.

The goal is not to hand people fish. It’s to teach them. If you just give someone your help without teaching them, they will only become reliant on that help.

I’ve been trying for some 10+ years now fixing myself. It made everything worse.

A “Showerthought” is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you’re doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

  • Both “200” and “160” are 2 minutes in microwave math
  • When you’re a kid, you don’t realize you’re also watching your mom and dad grow up.
  • More dreams have been destroyed by alarm clocks than anything else

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as “capitalism” and “communism”. If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy’s Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.
