Or be surprised if it stuck around for the next 5 years. PS5 is already on the chopping block due to poor raytracing performance. The only thing keeping it around is most likely because Nvidia (and now also AMD) is too busy with AI to push graphics hardware.
And it’s undergone like one remodel already, 5 years in. So, it’s going to get another remodel about 2 or so years down the road, signifying again how close to its end it would be. Then we’d get an announcement about another 2 years from Sony themselves about the PS6 and whatever else.
Seems likely given the overlap between generations.
PS1 - 1995 to 2006
PS2 - 2000 to 2013
PS3 - 2006 to 2017
PS4 - 2013 to 2025
PS5 - 2020 to 20???
So 11 years, 13, 11, 12…
PS5 is 5 years in. Don’t expect it to shut down until at least 2031, maybe even 2033.
Based on this we’d expect the PS6 by 2027, meaning there is only one year left for the Ps5 as “current Gen”.
Sure the “lifespan” of the console will be longer, but most people think of it in terms of the console being the current generation of consoles.
Blows my mind that Sony was supporting the PS1, 2 and 3 in 2006.
This is actually a really bad comparison.
You should be comparing it to when the next console is released.
They are still making PS4 games. Just because a new gen launches doesn’t mean the previous gen is cut off.

I’m really curious if it’ll stick around even longer given how slow tech advancement has become.

The long generation got extended because of the 2008 financial crisis, if anything I’d have expected a covid extension on the PS4.

Then the PS5 will eventually cease.
