Beijing says claims it is nearing a deal with Washington to resolve the trade war are ‘fake news’

Beijing has called on the US to “completely cancel all unilateral tariff measures” if it wants trade talks, in some of China’s strongest comments yet on the impasse between the world’s two economic superpowers.

“The unilateral tariff measures were initiated by the US,” said He Yadong, a Chinese commerce ministry spokesperson. “If the US truly wants to solve the problem, it should . . . completely cancel all unilateral tariff measures against China and find a way to resolve differences through equal dialogue.”

Beijing has maintained that the US must make the first move to de-escalate the crisis, which is threatening to spark a hard decoupling between the two countries’ economies.

Chinese analysts argue that the US imposition of high tariffs make it difficult for Beijing to find a way to defuse the crisis.

China’s President Xi Jinping would find it difficult to engage personally with Trump on the trade war unless this was preceded by extensive negotiations to hammer out a deal, they say.

    Just saw another reporting on MSNBC’s YouTube that according to Trump internal sources “they expected China to be one of the first to come begging, given the size of their exports to the US”.

    1. Anyone who knows China, as a millenia-old civilization, knows they are too proud to grovel and give in to bullying. Regardless of them being right or wrong. They know suffering, they have ancient history.

    2. There it is. The obvious statement some seem to miss. This is what Trump wants. He wants others to grovel at his feet, simple. Refuse to grovel, show some backbone and tell him to take a hike, and he’ll quickly backtrack in cowardice. As he did with China, with the tariffs, and everything else.

    And the funniest part? They don’t even have an actual goalpost set, as they just demonstrated with Japan when they visited the US to make a deal. They want to trick those afraid into overcomprimising themselves as much as they can out of despair. “How much are you willing to give us for our blessing?”.

    Bullies only attack when they think they might succeed. Show them you’re not afraid, and they shrink into their shells. Acknowledge their fake power, and they’ll only get worse with time. We might hurt in the short term, but he’s gonna endure the consequences of his stupidity in the long run.

    Stand strong. Stand united. Don’t give in. And this mainly to Europe, Canada, Mexico, and all of the British Commonwealth.

    Why is it when I read one of these news articles China always appears to negotiate from a position of strength while Trump sounds like a bumbling idiot?

      No, Trump imposed additional tariffs without reason on China. The only reason China raised tariffs, and by the way they literally stopped raising them because it’s pointless since they’re already so high, is because Trump started imposing them when he took office.

      There already were trade agreements and tariffs in place negotiated with both countries input. These new tariffs were just slapped on by the Trump admin not as a reaction to anything but as a unilateral imposition.

      You could also say they’re unilateral because they’re only aimed at China and no other states if you want to look at it that way too.
