Tiny yes, but IMO getting the attention of computer gamers needs to be the next step if a Linux flavor is going to become a household name.

Even if it’s “SteamOS” that becomes the household name instead of “Linux” that’s still good overall. Maybe it’ll turn into how people used to say they had “Droid” smartphones, not Android.

I’ve heard good things about Borg but I’ve never tried it. I use restic which sounds like it has similar features, but it supports S3 storage which is what I use.

Good news, you can use someone else’s. Backblaze is pretty cheap. It adds up to about $5USD per Terrabyte, and it’s pro-rated. So 500GB is $2.50,etc.

Hetzner recently introduced some S3 compatible object storage, too.

Object Storage and “S3” are just ways to refer to a certain type of system. To interact with it, you just need tools that have S3 support built in.

Pretty much every popular backup solution supports S3 type storage.
