Games@lemmy.world•Update: 136 workers have been laid off at id SoftwareEnglish
46·3 days agoThis in particular is probably the worst thing to come out of this whole debacle. id was an ecosystem, not just a dev house. I’m not sure that many will be able to forgive Microsoft after this one. Out of all the studios, this one is the most damning. There just isn’t a clean logic to it other than pure corporate shortsighted greed.

Technology@lemmy.world•Unpopular truth: Telemetry collection actually happens because people are garbage at being helpful to supportEnglish
54·6 days agoThey do give a shit about what the collective is doing, which is ironic, because the people that want things to change are the people that stop Microsoft from seeing what they are doing. When the power user opts out of letting Microsoft see how they use Windows, it pushes Windows user base more towards the center, as Microsoft sees it. So, when a feature is lost, a user can’t claim that the feature was load bearing because their use-case is self-muted. Of course, you can always just switch to Linux and hope whatever feature you want has enough support from the community to maintain status in the kernel, but that’s just trading one engineer for the other.

Games@lemmy.world•GOG seemingly shares that they are considering physical PC 'big box' games. Maybe?English
1·7 days agoOptical storage is much cheaper than physical storage at the moment. If I wanted to back up my entire steam library, it would be less expensive to do it with a mix of Blu-rays and DVDs. Blu-rays are also good from 10-50 years, with archival grade good for up to 100 years.
Now, yes, I can just burn the installers to the disc, so that’s fine, but I’m talking specifically about them released big box games, where I don’t necessarily want the game, but I do want the launcher/installer experience as it was when it was first released.

21·8 days agoI’d rather see them just list the ISOs so we can burn them to disc ourselves. These are fun, but niche. Listing an ISO isn’t far off from what they regularly do.

Games@lemmy.world•I'm loving zelda-like souls-likes right nowEnglish
21·14 days agoIt does, and that’s a great thing, but playing the game as intended is pretty rough for me. Like I said, if that kind of difficulty is your gig, go for it, or, if you don’t mind tweaking the difficulty and playing an easier version, then go for it. I’m playing a soulslike for the difficulty, so changing it to make it easier feels like going against principals.

72·14 days agoI’ve tried Mina a few times now, and I can’t get into it. I has that old school “unfairness” to it. If that’s your thing, fine, but it comes off as punishing for the sake of punishment. One example is that your weapon has a slight knockback when you connect with an enemy. It’s enough to knock you off of the very small tiles you often find yourself on, and then you lose a quarter of your health bar when you fall into the void. It also has the worse traversal mechanic I’ve ever come across. It isn’t a dodge like you’d expect. It’s a “jump and be completely vulnerable and then jump again and hope it works out for you,” button. Don’t get me wrong. I can play the game, and I can likely beat the game, but I’m not sure I’ll have fun doing it. The design choices are frustrating, and they don’t have that soulslike flavor of, “I messed up, and it was my fault.”

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Does Lemmy feel hostile and/or insular to you?
4·16 days agoYou can be whatever you want to be. Karma isn’t really a thing here. If people don’t like what you have to say, then it’s tough tiddies. They can block you. If you get banned from a community, you probably didn’t want to be a part of it, anyway. Just be you and don’t worry what others think. People generally like genuine.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•"I've got demons to slay", sounds wayyy cooler than "I'm trying to better myself"
131·17 days ago“I’ve got demons to slay,” he said, and tipped his trilby. The final embers of his cigarette sent up signals from the ashtray that marked the end of the conversation he’d been practicing in the shower for three weeks now. He stood up, and farted a little bit, but it almost sounded like the chair moving, so he didn’t think anyone noticed. “M’lady.”

Games@lemmy.world•Guild Wars 3 | Announcement TrailerEnglish
4·1 month agoI loved 1, and I thought 2 was a very good evolution of that. I’m excited to see where 3 goes. I know a lot of people didn’t like the Living Story stuff, but I thought it was good, if a bit long winded. I’d like to see a refined version of that. I’d also like to see a little more team play. I don’t necessarily want a full TANK/DPS/SUPPORT role designation, but I would like to have the ability to lean a little more into those archetypes, all of the classes in 2 felt like DPS mains with a little other flavor sprinkled in.

I didn’t realize it was going 1.0 on the 10th, I just grabbed it in the summer sale. Nice.
