Thanks for replying :)
I managed to get it working with the answers from @Max_P@lemmy.max-p.me and this link:
https://www.zdnet.com/article/how-to-permanently-mount-a-drive-in-linux-and-why-you-should/
I must have been testing it when you answered :)
I’ve got them up and running, and working for both users, thank you :)
That’s brilliant, thank you :)
Usually
/mnt/whatever
for static mounts and/media/whatever
for removable mounts (those appear as drives in file managers, whereas /mnt doesn’t).
Just to check, if I mount the drives under /media, will that still treat them as removable, or will they appear as permanent drives?
Ext4 everywhere.
Linux is obviously very good, but you are right, we give Linux a pass sometimes because we ‘build’ it. We tend to overlook its flaws because we want it to be better than the competition.
I’ve recently had an upgrade fail to the point of a reinstall, a folder that I can’t share between two users on the same laptop, and shutdown buttons on two computers that disappeared. If those problems happened on Windows, I’d be really annoyed, but because they happened on Linux, I just fixed them and carried on.
I can’t comment on how many documents you have, but there’s a free version of Office 365
Have you tried the online version of MS Office? I’m not sure, but I think there’s a free version. Depending on the file, you might be able to convert it to another format, then use a FOSS tool going forwards.
I like it! 😁
I didn’t say that it was being used to represent anyone, or that it was being stolen, I said that it was already in use. To use your examples, I’d think that using Pi or the degree symbol to represent the fediverse would be a bad idea too, as they could also lead to confusion. The semicolon is punctuation, so there’s less chance of confusion with that.
If an astronomy group made a poster with the three stars, would the stars be representing star clusters, or advertising that they’re on the fediverse? Given that the fediverse is still relatively small, is there more chance of the stars being seen as an astronomical symbol?
Am I misunderstanding this - you want to replace a recognised symbol with a symbol that’s already being used by another group? That seems counterproductive at best.
I’m also wondering, have you spoken to anyone with poor eyesight? This is my reply to a comment below suggesting that the new symbol would be easier to read:
I’m reading this thread on mobile, and the fediverse logo next to the community name is much easier to see than the three stars. If I didn’t already know what the three stars were from the rest of the post, I wouldn’t have a clue what they were supposed to be in the body. They look like a blurry capital A. Obviously the fediverse logo is bigger there, which helps, but it’s not significantly bigger, and would still be clearer at a smaller size

86% of Mozilla’s revenue came from the agreement keeping Google as Firefox’s default search engine
That explains a lot. I’ve only recently switched back to Firefox after Chrome took the throne years ago. I still use Google’s services for now, so wanted their home page as my new tab page.
The only way I could find to do that was by using an extension, but every so often I get a warning from FF that my new tab page has been changed, and it gets reset. I looked up a way to stop the warnings, and found a Mozilla blog post with comments from staff claiming that it’s a security feature.
Apparently the only reason that you might not want to start with the FF start page is because you’ve been hacked 🙄
There’s an extension for Firefox and maybe Chrome that should help. I think it’s called ClearURL, or something similar. It removes the trackers from the ends of URLs
EDIT: That’s assuming that it’s a legitimate tracking URL, and not something that’s been added by malware.
That’s a good point. I haven’t cooked anything with apple that could go soggy for years, so I hadn’t thought of that. Pulled pork and apple pizza is sounding nice though :)
