61·8 months agoI’ve also heard the “stupid tax” or “dumb tax” as what you pay when learning or doing something new. There will be times that you look or feel like an idiot, but we’ve all been there, don’t let it stop you. Learn from your mistakes and persevere. You’re never too old to keep learning - knowledge, skills, compassion, empathy, shame, regret, success, failure. Life’s a trip, appreciate it for all its aspects and keep at it.

5·11 months agoAs a single tool, no, not a chance in hell of becoming fluent. It’s definitely a good aide and introduction to branch out into more media and sources of another language though.

13·11 months agoI will say, with Duolingo I do appreciate the manipulation to keep me going. I probably wouldn’t have spent near as much time on another language if it weren’t for keeping that streak going. I can definitely understand the harm in it being used for maligne purposes. With any tool, it’s who wields it and for what intent.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you succumb to the urge to stop the microwave a few seconds before it actually stops ?
191·11 months agoReally? First thing I do after a power outage is turn off the sound on the microwave. I’m not putting stuff in for hours, I’ve not forgotten about it. If I’m not taking it out of the microwave immediately it’s because I’m busy. Settle down, machine.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why do people install expensive hardwood flooring in their kitchens, the place where you are most likely to drop food, cutlery, spill liquids, etc?
41·1 year agoCarpet is much more resilient to moisture, as long as it gets dried back out - that’s why it’s so popular in basements. Tile and vinyl plank also hold up really well to lots of moisture. Wood Is ok with humidity, it will expand and contract, but immersion will destroy it.

3·1 year agoAlbeit in a well climate controlled area. High humidity isn’t good for bamboo. I used to work with a manufacturer whose warranty for bamboo floors had high requirements for humidity, which basically eliminated my area if you like to keep your windows open. If you are in a well climate controlled area, it’s awesome and renewable.
In reality, AI will help solve a lot of our medical ignorance. Not the goofball LLMs, but specialized AI algorithms specifically geared towards niche medical research and applications. Don’t let GPT and Gemini sour the potential of some possibly game changing software.
