Gotta remember that a lot of Lemmy users are here because they’ve been banned from everywhere else. All the big Lemmy instances are highly moderation averse but I still report dipshits when I see them.

Getting a local security camera setup is kind of a pain but do able. Look into the self hosted software Frigate and go with their recommended brands.

In the US they use Chromebooks, not really any better but they do have Linux under the hood.

You’re not missing anything whatsoever. I got a great deal on a lightly used Pixel 10 Pro and other than the telephoto camera lens (which is admittedly nice) there is literally no functional difference I notice day to day from my previous Pixel 7 (not pro).

I also believe Frigate actually has a home assistant “app” version so it can be installed right on the same device.

Yes exactly, my potentially hot take is that twenty years from now we’ll look at immutability as the tipping point that sent Linux mainstream on desktop.

I think Fedora Kinoite is the best distro for someone coming from Windows due to KDE’s flexibility and similarity to Windows and it’s immutability. Default Ubuntu is great for people familliar with MacOS, and it can even be themed to be basically indistinguishable.
