I’d suggest already exploring alternatives now. There’s front ends, alternate links, … all with pro’s and cons.

I will say though, once you stop using an account and cut out the feed/algo out of your diet it becomes apparent very quick how much of a grip they hold on our attention just by the layout and such. Now I just check 2 channels every few days and even that’s losing my interest.

Some rich jack off gets caught in a scandal. 2 months later he’s on the Christian shopping channels telling how he’s finally found the lard. Like ffs how many times do we have see this episode again?

Sort of a questionnaire that kinda walks you through the kind of things you’ll use your machine for, what kinda hardware you have,… and then eventually gives you say 3 to four choices at the end. (So the average user can look at a few screenshots and make a choice based on that. Because let’s be honest we all choose our Linux partially with our eyes just like we listen to music).

In a way I feel this might give us new freedom. I’ve ditched a lot of online stuff over privacy and the amount of time and freedom in your head you get in return is amazing.

Don’t get me wrong the fediverse is a lifesaver when it comes to staying up to date about the stuff that matters to us (privacy, politics, Linux, ssh,…) so there will have to be some solution.

But in the bigger picture, fuck it. Read a book.
