When you use the /init command in claude code, it’ll scan your whole project and write a CLAUDE.md, which is basically an overview of the project contents and architecture that it uses as context when responding to queries.

My personal position(belief) is that we are in consciousness… ‘submerged’ as it were. Or even a radio wave for it to connect to. along with everything forming this reality. Like interconnected.

I certainly had this feeling too when I had an ego death experience. Though I attribute that more to my mind being formed by evolution around an ego/actor, and when this ego is missing, the subconscious might have to come up with a plausible alternative to keep the brain circuits working/comprehend reality. I even thought in terms of “he” instead of “I” about “myself” (the person), but my consciousness felt like a separate universal “they” in this moment. Neat experience for sure.

But to me it still seems most likely that as life is entirely formed by evolution, and things like instincts, pain, memories, agency, emotions, reasoning, model of the world, personalities etc. have advantages for survival, they are selected for in their most basic forms, get more sophisticated over time and eventually coalesce into what we experience as consciousness.

So to me it seems very very likely that most animals have consciousness, with varying degrees of sophistication regarding those abilities. Some animals might even surpass the sophistication of humans on some of these abilities, if the evolutionary pressure for that was stronger for them than for us.

On plants I’m more sceptical because their behavior doesn’t need to be nearly as complex as that of moving animals for survival I believe, it can probably rely much more on “hardcoded” behavior. Although reality loves it’s exceptions and complications so who knows.

Vehicle wise we might offer a different experience for a consciousness to know itself.

Yeah that is another view on that I guess.

To live is to consume. And anything we consume has consciousness. We’re all ‘guilty’ of consuming in order to live as a flesh body regardless of what it is we consume.

To me theres still a big difference between harvesting a carrot and cutting the throat of a pig. But all aspects of living have an impact on the environment and animals and humans, to different degrees, of course. So I agree that we’re all guilty and that nobody is perfect, and that vegans aren’t automatically good people and meat eaters aren’t automatically bad people. Some vegans kinda forget that they also ate meat for many years without considering the harms and that they might still do other problematic things too so they really don’t have an excuse to look down on people.

Your position is basically that humans are the only species that has consciousness, correct? That means if you take a dog or chimpanzee or whatever and burn it alive, they wouldn’t feel a thing in your view because they’re not conscious? Just to make sure we are on the same page.

As I see it, we even have the same fundamental issue with human consciousness. Where are the papers, what is the proof that all humans are conscious, or even just one human? I’m not aware of any hard proof.

You just know you’re conscious, and you assume from that that all other humans are too. But you can’t actually prove anyone else is conscious.

By your argumentation and standard of evidence, putting humans on factory farms would actually be fine too, as long as we don’t have hard proof that they are actually conscious.

But I don’t think it works for the following reason:

The argument “other animals are not conscious, therefore their treatment isn’t an ethical issue” relies on that definitely being the case. If there’s still a chance that they are conscious, it remains an ethical issue. You actually need hard proof.

The counter position “other animals might be conscious, so we must not (potentially) torture them by the millions/billions in case they are” doesn’t have that requirement.

The burden of proof lies where do don’t give the benefit of the doubt, not where you do.

You could say that they might be conscious, sure. But raising animals takes a lot more animal feed than just eating plants directly, so industrially farmed meat would still be the most unethical choice either way.

We have to eat something, eating plants directly minimizes both animal deaths and plant deaths.

Even if only plants had consciousness and animals didn’t, factory farming would be still be the most unethical source of food.

There are newer models that can charge to 80% in 15 min. It will probably take a while until fast chargers are widespread, but this is where things are going.

Besides YouTube, I only really used Reddit in the last years. Since the API change I basically switched over to Lemmy. About once a month I browse one of like 3 subreddits for a few minutes, but that’s it.

Imo it would be much better to only ban it at places where there are a lot of people and do proper education in schools so that children actually understand why it’s a terrible idea.

Seems like the first number is just grid-scale battery storage, while the second includes home batteries, which grew faster in the last years. Grid scale takes more time to get approval, build, connect.

Since the industrial revolution, fossil fuels were the only affordable energy sources that could meet the demand of industrialized countries. Until 5-10 years ago.

We’re now in a situation where most people can still pretend that climate change isn’t serious, and the fossil fuel lobby is stronger than ever. And yet over 90% of new electricity generation is already renewable, because it has simply become cheaper than coal and gas power in the last years.

As climate impacts worsen, the pressure to decarbonize will only get larger. The lobbies have been fighting tooth and nail against the energy transition for over 40 years, but they are rapidly loosing ground now in most countries.

It’s right to be alarmed about climate change, there will be serious long-term impacts, but it seems irrational to be completely fatalistic. Just comparing the battery prices and solar panel prices and ev market with 10 years ago reveals a truly massive shift. And this is just the beginning of the energy transition.

20 years ago you could have said “Well, solar panels might be great for sustainability in theory, but the fossil fuel industry is so overwhelmingly powerful and solar panels so bad and expensive, it’s absolutely futile.”

Now, over 90% of added power plants are renewable, because there was at least some pressure to implement alternatives, and now they have matured enough to become economically viable on their own.

I think there are certain parallels to factory farming and plant-based alternatives + cultivated meat. We know that factory farming is very unsustainable, especially in terms of climate impact, resource use and zoonotic diseases (like bird flu and swine flu). These issues become ever more pressing as factory farming continues. We just won’t have a choice at some point but to switch to alternatives that are more sustainable, or everything goes to shit.

Creating demand for the alternatives funds their R&D and furthers their availability, which in turn leads to better products for lower prices, which makes further adoption much easier. Advancing the alternatives might have a much bigger impact than the mere reduction in meat consumption.

The more early adopters, the faster new technologies can advance. That’s true for every sustainable industry like solar energy, wind energy, battery storage, electric cars, and also meat alternatives.

It is absurd, and complicit at this point. I think most people who are informed about what’s happening in Gaza would agree on this. But it’s not much of a topic in public discourse here and quite a few people still believe that the IDF is fighting against terrorists, so there’s not enough pressure against this. Especially amongst the conservatives.

I don’t think the official one is gonna be bad by any means. They will probably fix the biggest flaws with hindsight and modernize the graphics, and it will be a big improvement over the original if everything goes right.

But ultimately they had deadlines to meet and many more games in the pipeline, whilst the Skyblivion team can work on everything for as long as it takes, experiment much more and put as much detail and soul into everything as they want. I think that will make a difference, but both will be good games.

Skyblivion (the fan remake) will probably have much more attention to detail and will also release this year, after over 10 years of development. The dev log videos look amazing. I’d be very surprised if the official remake is as good.

And when it’s the only way to keep their family from starving, for example, people will consent in droves, securing supply.

I feel like if a child with a similar level of cognition as the cow harms other children, most people will say they have no moral agency yet, and will still see harvesting their leather as immoral.

There are two ways to resolve that inconsistency…

And the good thing is, when demand for (human) leather is higher than supply, people will just breed some more humans, keep them on farms, use their labor and sell their leather. With nothing going to waste, just the beautiful circle of life.

We’ve gotten quite efficient at doing that so there’s plenty opportunity to have more jobs, make a profit and to provide a product at an affordable price point, at the same time, all with human leather farms. Just have to compromise on welfare and sustainability step by step for more profit, but humans are already really great at ignoring such things when it’s advantageous to them, so most won’t ask any pesky questions anyways. We just have to normalize human leather (from factory farms) and everything will be great.

Crypto bros depend on more people speculating with their currency of choice to increase the market value. If they’re pissed, that’s a good sign.

I’m not happy when people die. But looking at the scale of institionalized cruelty in the American healthcare system, I can certainly understand the feeling of retribution that many Americans have when people who are responsible for the suffering and deaths of others, while getting rich from that, get the same fate. Especially when they or people they know have been denied coverage. Of course some people don’t just want to bend over, and a political solution is out of the question for the foreseeable future.
