The Faroe islands are volcanic. The Adirondacks are a combination of geologic uplift and glaciation.
The appearance is really just due to water level. If you raised the ocean up to the Adirondacks, it’d look similar. If you lowered it at the Faroe islands, you’d get some of the same lakes, but not a full mountain range.
