They’re desperate because they’re losing their grip. It may look like they’re trying to tighten their grip, and they are, but it’s because they’re slipping, so they’re also scrambling, and panicking. Attitudes are shifting and shit is getting bad faster than they were prepared for. Their hubris is catching up to them. Their tech-utopian dreams are now starting to contact and conflict with reality, and reality is going to run them over without even slowing down. Musk and all the rest going so quickly from tens of billions to hundreds of billions to now trillions (in a matter of years!) is not a sign of consolidation of wealth, it’s a sign of the currency they are depending on starting to lose meaningful, realistic value. It’s starting to look like hyperinflation for billionaires, and it’s going to end the same way. Ironically they’ve already gutted and robbed the and tried to automate and replace the middle and working classes so extensively that it’s probably going to shield us from the worst of it. It will be bad, but not as bad as it could be. Additional social support is going to be required on the other side, but we’ll also be able to take advantage of some of the very technologies and cost-cutting measures they’ve been using to replace us.

I’m switching to glm 5.2 or kimi plans and never touching anthropic.Heads up, Kimi is the only one that requires a fucking email to opt out of having your data used for training. Everyone else has a toggle switch.
GLM 5.2 is pretty nice according to benchmarks though.
Yeah one thing I immediately find offputing is kimi registration options - it’s phone number or Gmail. Why? Why not any email?

Probably not, as they have a level of guarantee from the company that everything is work related and nationalities are verified. If anything were to be flagged they would send it to the admin.
I would be much less reluctant to do this for work, since I, well, pretty much only do work stuff on my work laptop with it. But how is this verification supposed to work? I am very not okay with some random company doing this. Especially if they retain the data.
There is also zero reason for doing this. I am very clearly over 18 and my account is tied to a company mail address…
If there’s one thing I imagine this tech would be pretty good at, it would be profiling writing styles. Given enough samples, I don’t see why a personal account without ID wouldn’t be able to be mapped with high confidence to a corporate account with ID. Especially if connections come from the same region.

This is probably certifying your nationality as the US government has placed anthropic under export restrictions.
If they don’t do that for GPT 6 when it lands, we’ll know it’s just retaliation for the whole thing where Anthropic didn’t want to give the US military unrestricted access or whatever (as they claim anyway)
That’s like 50% of it. The other half is Amazon running to the Whitehouse and showing how you could backdoor requests past the guard rails simply by asking their most powerful models to “review this code”
