Loss in global trust. If the EU app scans people’s messages people will just say they’re probably doing it for everyone. They also risk losing their near-global dominance if all their tech savvy users pick a new home and trigger a chain reaction bringing everyone with them. Next thing you the rest of the world starts ditching WhatsApp for a superior alternative (which predominantly just lack users currently)
This would be interesting to observe if it actually played out, but I think we’re underestimating user inertia here, looking at how many people still use WhatsApp / Telegram over Signal, or Reddit over Lemmy … apathy is strong in these times

Who, WhatsApp? They’ve fought via the legal system to retain privacy a few times.
