Reddit added that Persona “promises not to retain the picture for longer than seven days” and will not have access to a user’s data on the site.
Awesome, I totally trust this random company then. I’m sure they’ll never have a data breach !
Very careful wording there - this leaves them open to…
a. Sell it to Reddit.
b. Pass it to their partner company who “archives” it.
c. Sell it to someone else.
If you want to know this information, it would be stupid to just read the press release. This information is contained in a privacy policy, which is much more detailed than a press release, which never contains details like this which - let’s be honest - most people don’t give a shit about.
Persona’s privacy policy is here. It does not cover selling your data to reddit or any other company - which means that under EU and California law, doing so is not legal. It does say it will share your data among affiliates such as to “archive” it - but I don’t really see the issue with that specifically. The fact that your personal data is sitting in an Amazon S3 bucket is not of itself a problem, except if there is a problem with S3. You’re exposed to similar risks if Persona keeps all the data itself.
They specifically mention that they use your data for marketing and advertising, and they also say in the CCPA section that California may view their activities as “selling data”, as “some of our data sharing described in this privacy policy may be considered a “sale” or “sharing” under those definitions, such as disclosing Personal Data to third parties for our own advertising purposes.”
So, yeah, they totally do sell all your data to everyone who is paying.
Because nothing protects children more than uploading their selfie or government id to a random company who “promises” to delete the information seven days later … because of course it will and everyone will be able to check and see the pink unicorn in person.
This legislation will make sure everything gets locked behind an identifying login, lest a bad word might appear, and they get fined.
Good for the platforms and government ofcourse. It’s only us people that lose.
Move along now. The joint corporate government newspeak will save you from evil! For the children!
I will never verify my age online with a picture of my face. Its astounding people go along with this
This should be illegal.
Give your info to the cooperate overlords to make a better profile of us, that way they’ll be able to better manipulate us. Gotta teach AI about us.
Fuck reddit. It’s become a right wing honey pot
Won’t someone please think of the children! 😭
Spez is thinking very hard about children.
