God damn. That unit looks like something you find in the futuristic labs of Deus Ex and System Shock 2.

Cool, I have one of those too. You should post updates when the Seedling actually start growing.

    What did you plant?

The box had a starter pack of herbs. So I’ve got dill, thyme, parsley, mint and two types of basil (very hyped to make Thai basil curry)

I had one like this for years. When you dispose of the old plugs, try and keep the plastic parts. You can cut them some to get the roots out, but at least the top half. You can buy rock wool and other substrates to grow your own seeds, and the plastic part can be handy to keep the new substrate in place.

Have fun! These are really quite easy to use and fun.

Fyi “basil” is not the same thing as “thai basil”

I’m still trying to figure out how to bonsai it so that it doesn’t overtake the entire thing and end up as a woody mess with a couple leaves pressed right up against the LEDs. I end up restarting my basil every year because so far I have been unsuccessful. I use a lot of basil and make a lot of pesto, but it’s never enough.

So we don’t have one of these fancy-shmancy setups, we have an indoor greenhouse…pod…thing…with dirt…

                ANYWAY

Pinch off the flowers as soon as the start to come up, don’t even let them open. We’ve been keeping the same basil plant going for 4 years, and just propagated 2 new ones from cuttings. Apparently once they flower they basically give up and go all woody and beg for death.

    Is it aeroponics or hydroponics?

Everything refers to it as hydroponics, not sure what the difference would be. Novice gardener with a shriveled brown thumb.

It looks like Miracle Grow bought them out and shut them down, which is shit.

Hydroponics is generally where roots sit in water

Aeroponics is generally where roots sit in air/environment with precipitating humidity

I recommend that you focus on lettuce rather than herbs. From my experience you can never keep up with the amount of basil that will pop out of that thing.

I’ll probably switch to salads once I get the hang of it. I do have a dehydrator and work has a food pantry, so I’m sure it’ll all end up being used.

I’ve had pretty good luck at transplanting after the herbs get big. Also a dehydrator is nice.

That’s a really good deal, especially if it came with a seed pack.
